Raccoon dogs!

From the archives of the BBC in Nottingham..
Raccoon dogs , what are they and where are they from?
They are terrorizing, vicious and left a village under seige according to headlines but what are raccoon dogs really all about?
Two of the curious creatures found fame when they escaped their enclosure in a Nottingham village on Tuesday. After a neighbor said one of the creatures attacked a goat, the media she says as usual went a bit crazy and terrified everyone by adding a news alert as these creatures are something to be feared. But are they dangerous as the media and citizens portray? Are they raccoons or are they dogs?
Many people are stumped as to what they really are..One resident had a harrowing night to remember and will not forget coming face to face with them any time soon.
Mandy Marsh and her husband tell this story, " it was about 4 am in the early morning we coulsd hear a real wild noise outside unlike anything we ever heard before, My husband went outside and was gone for about 10 minutes when he came rushing back in all out of breath, " he said to Mandy, " You've got to come outside and see this, I dont know what it is but there is a wild animal attacking the goat." The couple fended off the hissing creature but not before taking a photo , posting it online and asking if anyone knew what it was..
A Raccoon is neither raccoon nor dog , says a member of the RSPCA , the closest comparison is foxes and badgers, being nocturnal hunts at night and lives in thick undergrowth and woods..Originally from the Far East raccoon dogs were introduced into Eastern Europe as part of the fur trade.
Their cuddly appearance meant until recently they were openly traded as exotic pets ..which according to the RSPCA is a very bad idea. When people adopt these exotic pets into their homes they most generally have to cage them because of destructive behavior and when they are caged they become agressive and unmanageable, which is the case when caging any animal.the RSPCA has rehomed about 13 of these creatures and specifically have homes with people who are experienced with them.RSPCA states to remember they are an invasive species not meant to be around humans, but what few are domesticated are giving little choice in rehoming them. The owner who wishes not to be named said he was concerned for the animals safety before they were found ..
On a personal note here I have no doubt that these creatures have very destructive powers like an ordinary raccoon ..I have had to trap and release Raccoons when i was involved with animal welfare and know what an ordinary raccoon can do...they are very powerful little creatures and can demolish even a steel live trap..I seen one tie a live trap rod in a knot...no shit real thing!

well unless you are in the exotic pet trapping trade you will probably never see one..They are not something that happens on a regular basis and if you did see one it would be someones pet....Its a story on google about them and the two that escaped their enclosure

Otherwise known as the Tanuki in Japan. They are part of the Canidae family, which includes wolves, foxes, dingos, dogs, etc.

Yeah, they're akin in temperament to the wolverine, although the wolverine is a member of the weasel family.

Or like a Honey badger. You know the saying, "Honey badger just don't care"? Yep, most tanuki and close cousins don't.
