Cool to Hate

I had a friend recently come to me and complained about some of the<b> chatrooms </font></b>and how people act in them. I can't do anything about it but I tried to help them understand why things like this happen and what to do about it and I thought I'd give me two cents on it.

First, while on this site (or any site really) you are completely anonymous. Chances of ever seeing anyone from this site that are trying to get under your skin is extremely unlikely. No random person on the internet knows anything about you, your mother, your sister... you get the idea.

Second, keep your cool. The anonymous nature of the internet bring out the darker personalities you wouldn't (normally) see. Keep in mind that in a chat room or in receiving IM's, what you read is nothing more than words. Although it's easy to flip when you read something or see comments, it's really not that big of a deal. If you can resist the urge to engage them back, then they don't have much of a point to keep trying to mess with you.

Finally, block and report. When in chat rooms, pay attention to who the moderators are and when problems begin and they haven't noticed it, send them an IM or address it there. Moderators are there to help and if you are in a good room, they will. Also, 04j.com will help out as well but they only can when you let them know you are having a problem.

I know this seems like kind of a "duh" post, but I've seen quite a few arguments get way out of hand here. Most of us are here to have some fun and talk to people. Don't let some jackass ruin your night.
