THE APOSTROPHE IS DEAD

The site takes out apostrophes, but in a blog title the A's don't show up unlike in a blog post. But in a blog comment the apostrophe survives!

I’m from Texas. My grasp of the English language is amazing. My use is horrifying.
There must be a Texan English dictionary. If not, one needs to be written.
British English doesn't mean much here. There's Irish English, Scottish English and Welsh English as well as English English. Within England, there's Oxford English, Northern English, West Country English, Essex English, London English, Scouse English, Geordie English, Brummie English etc.
When I speak to a Glaswegian, I generally haven't got a clue what they're talking about!

You're quite right, this site's system is fucked. But at least the site allows apostrophes in comments!
I can have an apostrophe outburst with this comment - ''''''' - I feel better now!

Good blog! Many people use slang, and use emojis, technology make stuff so easy for people, it's cause many of not to know the proper wordings.
But in the English language what is proper keeps changing. It's a generational thing!

The most important thing with language, including grammar, is that we're understood. Sometimes punctuation makes it easier to be understood. Written words without a full stop (you may say, period) is hard work to read because there's no break for the reader to pause to take in what's meant.

Do you use apostrophes correctly?..... Only by accident!!!

How good is your grammar? Up to 3rd grade and then 2 more of same.. 21 Years old when I finished middle school.....

Are you a grammarhead? No,I am bald, I did have blond locks but in time they went..

I noticed this on some profiles, I think it is not all site inclusive YET... it's not good to mess with grammar, we have enough problems already!!!
I agree, we have far more problems than the misuse of the apostrophe.
Thanks for stopping by.

That's not the only thing broken; the 'em dash' — is busted as well. Bugs, bugs and MORE bugs. 🐛 🕸 🦟🕷️🪲🐝

My grammar is pretty good, but I can always use a sexy editor to check my work; I've placed an ad. 😶❗❗
If the site is now stealing dashes, I'm dashing off!

The apostrophe is alive and well on my blog. I think the site picks on me last.

I have a pin on my purse that says, "I am silently judging your grammar." I think that answers your questions.
Being silently judged is the worst way of being judged; there's no comeback! Your purse is a grammar weapon.
PS. I've just re-read my reply to ensure there's no grammatical mistakes, though I'm not sure whether it's P.S. or PS. Have I missed a period?

I worry about AI. Those who own, control, develop and manage AI will be okay, but the rest of us will be its subjects.

As someone who had an English teacher for a mother, I try to get my apostrophes correct although sometimes I do struggle.

David Mitchell had a great rant on QI over the public's use of apostrophes especially when advertising - he thinks the printing companies know the correct use but they just make whatever the customer wanted knowing they'll get repeat business when someone points out the mistake.

Do other languages use the apostrophe as much as it is found in English? I know the French use it (in c'est for example), but is it as prevalent in German, Italian as it is in English?
As well as the French language, apostrophes are used in the German and Italian languages but not the Spanish language.
In the German language I suspect the apostrophe is used less because they have separate words for anything possessive. Its' book is sein Buch in German - I knew my schoolboy German would be useful eventually!

I'm not surprised by the decline in the use of the apostrophe; I'm a little surprised how common it's misused when used.
Thanks for stopping by.

Very true. It steals our photos, words and now apostrophes. Our identities will probably be next stolen .... oh they were several years ago when the site was hacked and members' personal details were taken!

I was tight with grammar and punctuation years ago. I have greatly relaxed now. I just don't sweat the small stuff. I can still pull out the uptight to write reports when needed
I wish I was more relaxed about grammar; I keep correcting my posts long after they've been read and commented on!

As you say, it's best to write to be understood whether that's proper or improper English.
I've stopped using the apostrophe in my blog posts.

Thanks Spunky! I was wondering where all the A were coming from in my post. Still trying figure out why some pics are post it side ways. And they are squashed in private messages. It has been amazing to watch one bug after another come to lite on this site over the 10 years. Lol
Those As are the missing apostrophes. I'm now trying to write blog posts without apostrophes because those As really get in the way for people reading and trying to make sense of things.
It's a mystery about your sideways photos. I've not had that problem. But I do have a problem with adding a tenth photo allowed by the site. If I upload a tenth photo, it gets combined with the first photo uploaded!

Come over to mine and check my grammar! [post 4424702]

I think I use apostrophes correctly. However, I always make sure to say it is (in my head) before I write it's though... its and it's can be confusing and if I'm using speech to text things can really get muddled up. Come on by when you can and bring your marking pen.
Your use of grammar is always perfect. You write well even if it's lots! Only teasing!

Do you use apostrophes correctly? - I hope so? but I can't be bothered to check anymore.
How good is your grammar? - My grammar passed away years ago.
I give up on good grammar, especially punctuation, when texting; good grammar becomes so much effort with all the tapping of keys required.

Grammarhead? Basically yes.
But I share my knowledge of English with the translator, who sometimes translates poorly. Occasionally an apostrophe can get lost.
But I think my results are not that bad. In other blogs, entire words are often missing, not just the apostrophe.
One of 04j.com's smallest problems ..

I use Google Translate a lot; it works well.
This site has many glitches. It steals letters, punctuation marks and images. What next?!

Thanks for the links. I've got Lynne Truss' Eats Shoots & Leaves book. It was a good read.
It's great to see another grammarhead in blogland. Thanks for stopping by.
