With all due respect, "I don't harass other bloggers".... Maybe harass is the wrong word, but when you critisize other bloggers for speed blogging, picture blogging, or anything else that is different from the way you blog, or when you write about what is "quality" and what is not, some bloggers are going to feel harassed by YOU. Can't you see it from the reader's perspective?

All good and worthy points, all well made, all no doubt merit further debate, but preferably not here.

I understood that the purpose of having a rotating list is to shed some light on the areas of blogville which are otherwise under exposed, the idea being to make the community more inclusive and approachable.

Your views on that would be welcome, thanks.
"Preferably not here" - Why? Why not here? Since so many seem to be blocked by the people that they dislike or have problems with, this seems to be the only fair level playing field where people can air grievances and voice issues.

P.S. I have no views on making the community more inclusive. I just like to read a wide range of posts. I only felt to respond to the people on the most viewed list who seem to be contridicting themselves and pointing fingers when they should be look to their own actions.

What will be the time frame for the 'list' to cycle through?
How many blogs/posts will be included on the 'list'?
If too long,Or too many~
it will appear to just be the 'recent posts' list repeated...

ok I play games and have contests on my blog! sometimes I have to put up more then a few posts about them. say polls because only 10 people can be shown on a poll at a time. I suppose I could put them all on one post but that doesn't usually work very well! my point is on this ..is...sometimes bloggers have reasons behind multiple postings! and sometimes..we just get in the mood! I myself don't post EVERYDAY though! I received a few nasty e-mails about this recently saying I was a list hog! I am rarely ever mean to anyone and would prefer to be left out of this argument. rotate the list..fine...I don't know why I was attacked over this. I have no qualms about rotating it! I blog for myself..if no one wants to read me I won't be hiding in the closet with my blankie crying! just ranting! sorry! I just wasn't sure why I got attacked over this issue! i'm not fighting this change! I say go for it!

Sandra,

as you repeatedly take up the question of harassment here, would you care to define what you mean with it??? Or stalking?? Being abusive?

In real terms, not as something abstractive.

Guess I'm not the only one who doesn't follow your blog and doesn't know what's happening behind the scenes so cannot get a picture what you are meaning and as none of the other top bloggers seem to suffer from this.

Who in their right mind would attack the sweetest...kindest...most beautiful spirit on this whole site?

And then delete their profile so she cannot defend herself.

Talk about abuse and harrassment. Now this is what those words look means.

It seems like a lot of posts are deviating from the topic at hand, whether members support the rotating list or not.

I believe the way it would help Aryana the most is state your opinion, the reason behind your thoughts and leave it at that. If someone disagrees, let them since that person is just as entitled to their opinion as the next person.

It is not constructive to post comments after comments defending personal thoughts and it wastes a lot of Aryana's time to sift through these posts to find the ones that directly address the issue.

My 2 cents, and I'm not going to argue with anybody who disagrees. There's a vote next to this comment, so if anybody disagrees, they're welcome to vote to the negative.

    Quoting community:
Yes, herein lies the problem. Replacing the most active blogs section with a rotating recent blog posts list will be redundant. We need to figure out if it's best to create that rotating list, or work on a system that allows users to sort this section according to their preferences.

I originally suggested the list would change whenever the page is refreshed. As of how many posts would be included, I am not sure of this right now. I believe it should be around 30 (there are about 14 males and 14 females right now in the active blogs section).

Competitive blogging isn't always a bad thing. Many people enjoy competition in general. However, it appears that the majority here are unhappy with any ranking, so it seems best to abolish it-- if that's what most bloggers wish. We're working on the best way to do this.

Everyone's insight here, whether in favor or against this, is helpful.
My first option is the 'do it yourself' version of the list, just like some other things we can do here on this site (the normal profile search/browsing, groups etc).

But more or less anything goes as long as we get rid of the present ranking which is too often a picking order.
When there is a chance of misusing the position, it's never a good thing, creates bad blood and other negative side effects, incl. drama.

Competition is not bad as such, you are right - unless competition is the main reason for blogging, becomes the Thing!
And the reason for treating other bloggers bad.
We are all equal bloggers here, non of us good or bad, not to mention the best or the worst, just different.

Would be fine if nobody sees her/himself on a fictive pedestal.
Changing the list would prevent this probably. And stop the drama.

And give more exposure to people outside the top 10.
Some different life to Blogland

Thank you so much for taking this thing up and trying to find working solutions

New ideas always welcome?

Been thinking about this issue for a while and the pros and cons of some of the ideas.

So here is my 2 cents worth but am not particularly interested in the outcome, I'm never likely to make the front page, am just trying to add to the debate.

So far everyone has concentrated on Blogs and not Posts, so my idea is to replace the lists on the main blog page with a rotating list of "Trending Posts".

-------------------------------------

There would be a pool of "Trending Posts" defined as any post that gets a new/unique comment (and not from the blogger themselves) within a defined period. From this pool a list would be displayed, "Trending Posts", that would replace the "Active Blogs (by unique responses)" list.

This list would show the Blogger Profile Photo, Bloggers Name and Blog Title and the Title of the Trending Post and the Date Posted and the number of comments or unique comments, i.e. the format of the list would be the same as the "Most Recent Posts" list but rather than showing "Views" it would show "Comments".

For a blogger to be included in the "Pool" they would have to receive just one comment on one post within a specified period. This could be 24 hours or 7 days (only by doing a detailed analysis of blogs and posts and comments could one keep this pool reasonable). This pool could be called the "Trending Pool" from which Blogger's posts could be selected on rotation.

-------------------------------------

Note that rotation is not the same as random as rotation ensures that everyone with a "Trending Post" would appear sometime.

Note that a blogger with two or more "Trending Posts" would be in the pool twice but only have one "Trending Post" displayed upon a page load or refresh. Although it would also be possible to limit a blogger to their latest or top "Trending Post" if this was a better option.

Note that this system would display older posts as well. So maybe a time frame of 7, 30 0r 60 days could be included in the filter list so that posts older than this would not be included.

Note that currently friends only blogs and posts are included in the general lists. Would it be reasonable to exclude Friends Only Posts from the "Trending Posts" list as most members would not have access to these posts. The same consideration would need to be given to Friends Only blogs for the same reason.

Other changes.

There might need to be a few other minor changes to the main blog page as well... the "Actively Watched Blogs" would no longer be needed as the "Trending Posts" list would replace those three bloggers at the top of the Main Blog Page - or should we keep them anyway?

In this space, or above the "Trending Posts" list, it would be possible to insert the following links:
1. "Most Popular Male Blogs"
2. "Most Popular Female Blogs"
3. "Most Populer Couples Blogs"
4. "Most Popular TS/TV/TG Blogs"

I would also like there to be a link to the
5. "Most Popular Blogs in your Area"
which would be the same as the "Browse by Location" link.

The space currently occupied by the "Most Popular Male Blogs" list would now be occupied by an extended "Trending Posts" list allowing for 30 or 40 elements to be displayed in the list.

Considerations.

This idea may be off the wall, but it might be worth considering... New bloggers would get exposure so long as they got one comment, but a prolific blogger with multiple posts receiving comments might appear more often - is that a good or bad idea? It can be set by whether the a blogger can have more than one post in the "Trending Pool" or only their top post. Remember that a blogger would appear only once in the displayed list, but might re-appear with another post upon a page refresh.

I appreciate that bloggers with no comments would not be in the pool, maybe the pool needs to be expanded to include all bloggers posts within the last 24 hours, why 24 hours, because there needs to be a timeframe of some sort or we will just end up with an extended recent posts list.

By displaying the number of (unique) comments a browser of the list may decide to visit a well commented upon post. This is a downside if the change is to expose new little read bloggers but also has the upside browsers can get a feel for the popularity of a post. But would it encourage a comment growth on more commented upon posts.

Also the issue would be that once a post started to run away with comments, if visiting highly commented upon posts became the norm, it could be self perpetuating. This is why it might be a good idea to limit a post to the last 30 days.

Lastly.

These are my considered opinions on how to compile a list for the Main Blog Page. I am sure that there are loads more downsides (and maybe positives as well) and I am not trying to foster my opinion on others, just trying to think outside the box and add to the debate. Feedback welcome!

That is kinda my fault.... I looked at the codes at the start of the Comment I have Start Bold and forgot to include the End Bold so the Bold got inherited to your comment, as would some other text formatting I think, but it shouldn't, it a bug within the page coding and tables and/or style sheet and applied styles.

User formatting should not be inherited like that... sorry - lucky I did not use DeepPink Size 10 as well....lol!

I have been pondering this a bit lately as well. Was thinking that one of the issues on the boards is that the new blogs get rarely seen. What if instead of the female / male categories, the site went with range of watchers categories? You could have rotating lists under the column of 1-50 watchers, 51 - 100, 101 - 200, etc. This would allow those around forever to continue to be seen, while giving a venue for the up and cummers a chance to be found.

I still believe that any rotation of blogs should have short windows. 7 days max. The current system of 30 days keeps that list rather stale. Shorter shelf lives are the way to go so that the page looks newer more often. And with the short shelf life, more blogs get a chance to rise into awareness.

I have just looked the blog sorting experiment wonder why we need yet another part of the site that depends on 'scores'.

Isn't there a way for this rotating list to function without having to depend on scores? It has been my experience that the scoring function in various other parts of the site, such as the magazine, seems to give a competition mentality among some members.

Instead of scoring bloggers couldn't you just somehow focus more on the recently added blogs and highlight them?
