should computers refer to themselves as "i"?
should computers refer to themselves as "i"? i often use the telephone to check accounts, schedule pickups for my business by a national package-delivery service, and get customer service answers. many of the automated systems refer to themselves as "i", instead of "we". for some reason, that annoys the $#!+ out of me! maybe the companies think that the customer feels more comfortable by being given the illusion of "personal" service? i find that notion insulting. i know that the voice speaking to me is not an "i", but instead a machine which is not "thinking" and conversing with me, but instead only responding to my prompts as it was programmed to. therefore, i much rather prefer to hear "we", as the voice represents the combined efforts of the people who make the system work. what are YOUR thoughts on this? "well only get through this if we work together. if we dont, none of us will" |
