Soccer popularity

Soccer might possibly become more popular in the U.S. if the players spent more time upright than they do laying on the grass. I watched a good bit of the World Cup, including all of the final, and the grass got more action from the players than the ball did. And at one point one of the Spanish players was awarded a free kick after tripping over HIS OWN FEET, come on now. They flopped almost as much in this one game as Derek Fisher during the NBA finals.

Of course, one of the reasons we don't do well with soccer is because the rest of the world literally sends their best athletes to this competition. The U.S. has so many other sports to choose from which pay well on the pro level and are just as available at the youth age. Although this was not my original arguement, soccer in the U.S. would also be more popular under the following situation:

U.S. Soccer starting lineup (assume these guys have always had a soccer ball instead of their current sport)

Forwards - Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Andre Johnson (texans receiver)

Midfield - Chris Paul, Rajon Rondo, Drew Brees, Jason Kidd

Defense - Ray Lewis, Troy Polamalu, Ed Reed

Goalie - Dwight Howard

Coach - Phil Jackson
